Aeromexico Hijacking Ends Well, Passengers Safe

A hijacker used a fake bomb in an Aeromexico hijacking on Wednesday, but the incident ended up well, with all passengers being released safely. Mexican, U.S. and French citizens were among the 112 passengers and crew on AeroMexico Flight 576.

Jose Mar Flores, 44, told police that Wednesday's date — 9-9-09 — is the satanic number 666 turned upside down, and that the Aeromexico hijacking was the result of a divine revelation. He hijacked the jet from the resort city of Cancun.

After hijacking the Aeromexico jet, Flores ordered the pilot to circle over Mexico City seven times before landing, saying he wanted to warn Mexican President Felipe Calderon of an impending earthquake. Uh, huh.

Shortly after federal police stormed the plane, Flores released most of the passengers. Flores acted alone in the Aeromexico hijacking, although at first authorities detained others before it was clear who was involved.

Upon landing in Mexico City, pilots told the passengers the Aeromexico jet had been hijacked. Passengers said the hijacker never communicated with them directly.
