Unemployed Exceed Job Openings by Six to One

While people like Ben Bernanke say the recession is over, ask someone unemployed and you may get a different answer. According to the Labor Department’s July numbers, only 2.4 million full-time permanent jobs were open, with 14.5 million people officially unemployed. Do the math: that's a 6:1 ratio in the wrong direction.

Recent numbers have shown the pace of layoffs slowing. However, the number of continued unemployed remains high, as companies remain reluctant to higher.

I personally know several excellent colleagues who are out of work. One, in particular has been on numerous interviews, and yet has not landed a position. It reminds me of nothing less of the overbidding on housing that got us in this mess, with 20 or so finalists, not applicants, per position.

The New York Times related the plight of several different unemployed people.

Debbie Kransky, 51, has been without work since February, after being laid off from her second job in two years. Due to a quirk, and the short time she was in her second job, she has exhausted her unemployment benefits already. She has also gone through her life saving of $10,000.

Vicki Redican, 52, has been unemployed for nearly two years. She was once a $75,000 sales and marketing manager at a plastics company. She used to rely on substitute teaching assignments to keep afloat, but “Now, there are so many people substitute teaching that I can no longer get assignments,” she said.

Recession over? Maybe for some, but not for many.
