Brett Favre, who some have said has taken a back seat to Adrian Peterson on the Minnesota Vikings, pulled out a game with seconds left. In a miracle finish, Brett Favre threw a strike to Greg Lewis, who was only signed this week by the Vikings and Minnesota won 27-24.
Brett Favre finished the game 24 / 36, 301 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT. He had seconds left, but the 49ers went far too conservative after taking the lead 24 - 20. The offense gave the defense no help at all, giving the Vikings 90 seconds left to win the game.
The 49ers made a fight of it, turning what could have been a 16 - 7 Viking lead at halftime into a 14 - 13 lead for the 49ers, as the 49ers blocked a FG attempt by Ryan Longwell. CB Nate Clements ran the ball in the a TD.
The Vikings special teams fired back in the second half, however, with Percy Harvin running a kickoff back 101 for a TD. Still, the 49ers, with TE Vernon Davis, who was a first round draft pick for the 49ers but who has never shown what fans considered that sort of talent, breaking out in the game with 2 TDs, including the one that put the 49ers ahead 24 - 20.
While the 49ers managed to bottle up RB Adrian Peterson, however, giving him only a total of 85 yards, as I said, they went far too conservative offensively. Brett Favre had just enough time to complete another miracle.
The 49ers also lost RB Frank Gore, their all-Pro RB, to an injury after only one carry. He sprained his ankle in the SEA game last week, but said he would go, but left the field very early. X-rays showed no broken bones, and Glen Coffee replaced him, but he's no Frank Gore.
Additionally, the 49ers lost offensive lineman Joe Staley late in the game. This game could be costly, not just because they lost, but because of the injuries.
