As hard as they tried, and it wasn't a blowout by any means, the Detroit Lions finally won a game. Their streak of 19 consecutive losses, including all of last season, is over.
It may surprise you to know that the 19 consecutive losses is not a record. It's only the second longest winless streak in NFL history. However, the Detroit Lions are the only team to go winless in a season. The Lions (1-2) had not won since Dec. 23, 2007.
The Lions (1-2) seemingly put the game out of reach on backup RB Maurice Morris's two-yard TD run with 5 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. This gave Detroit a 19-7 lead after its two-point conversion attempt failed.
However, Washington (1-2) didn't give upp easily. They quickly scored on a four-yard touchdown pass from QB Jason Campbell to backup RB Rock Cartwright, cutting the lead to 19-14.
Giving the ball back to Detroit, the Washington defense couldn't prevent the Lions from picking up a first down that ran valuable time off the clock and cost the Redskins three timeouts. With only 1:05 left and receiving the ball on their 22, Washington couldn't score, the Detroit had its first win in over a year.
The more important question might be, when will Detroit win its next game?
