The win, a three-shot victory for Mickelson, was his first since his wife and his mother were diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, who finished second, received quite a consolation prize. He won the a FedEx Cup title and its huge payout.
Tiger Woods had to feel good, not just about the Fedex Cup payout, but about a year in which he rebounded from major knee surgery. Woods won six times, and was either first or second in more than half his events.
The only minus for Tiger Woods was that he won no majors this year. Still, a $10 million Fedex Cup payout has to soothe that pain, right?
Phil Mickelson's year was nothing to sneeze at either. With his victory Mickelson returned to No. 2 in the world, and climbed to No. 2 in the Fedex Cup as well. With that, he earned his own hefty Fedex Cup payout, in the form of a $3 million bonus, on top of his $1.35 million for winning the Tour Championship.
It wasn't a done deal for Woods on Sunday. The Fedex Cup wasn't his until two others faltered. Kenny Perry was the projected winner until he completed his round with a 74. Steve Stricker had to finishe ahead of Woods to grab the Fedex Cup payout, but while he was in position to do that; mud on his ball in the 16th fairway led to a bogey, leading Stricker to a 69 and sixth.
