Am earthquake with the magnitude of 8.3 hit near the U.S. territory of American Samoa. The quake struck 20 miles below the ocean floor, 120 miles from American Samoa and 125 miles from Samoa.

The earthquake hit at 6:48 AM Tuesday (1748 GMT). A tsunami swept into Pago Pago, capital of American Samoa, shortly after the earthquake, with sea water surging inland about 100 yards before receding.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu issued a tsunami warning for numerous Pacific islands, including the Samoas, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, French Polynesia and Palmyra Island.

It also posted a tsunami watch for Hawaii, Vanuatu, the Marshall Islands, Solomon Island, Johnston Island, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Wake Island, Midway Island and Pitcairn.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage. You'll probably recall that in 2004, a powerful 9.0 quake in the Indian Ocean created a tsunami that killed tens of thousands people in Asia.
