Five Hundred Carat Diamond Found in Cullinan Mine

South Africa's Cullinan mine, which already produced the largest diamond in history, has produced another biggie. A diamond the size of a chicken egg has been found at the mine.

The find was announced by Petra Diamonds, Ltd. The company said the newest large Cullinan diamond is 507.55 carats in size and weighs just over 100 grams.

While still unfinished, the diamond may turn out to be one of the world's top quality gems. According to the company's CEO, Johan Dippenaar, the diamons is of "exceptional color and quality."

The Cullinan mine, where the diamond was found, is northeast of Pretoria, South Africa. No value has yet been estimated for the diamond.

The Cullinan mine produced its namesake, the Cullinan diamond, which was 3,106 carats in the rough. The finished stone is set in Britain's Imperial Scepter as part of the Crown Jewels.
