One-Third of Parents Against Swine Flu Inoculations

The federal government is recommending that people get swine flu vaccinations, once they become publicly available. An Associated Press - GfK poll shows that despite the dangers associated with swine flu, and said recommendations, more than a third of parents don't want their kids vaccinated against the swine flu.

It's a quite natural reaction. While the swine flu at first became thought of as a deadly disease, as it spread globally, it was recognized that for most people it's no worse than seasonal flu. Despite that, it has reached pandemic status, according to the WHO.

The issue is that many parents are concerned about possible side effects from the new vaccine. That, coupled with assertions that the swine flu is no worse than seasonal flu, gives parents pause.

Many are concerned over possible risks from the swine flu vaccine. The AP poll, conducted Oct. 1 - 5, said that only 38% plan to allow their children to be vaccinated at school. At the same time it noted that 72% are concerned about side effects.

Despite that high number, a little math shows that far more than 50% of respondents would be willing to have their children vaccinated. However, many remember the 1976 swine flu immunization program that vaccinated 40 million Americans against an epidemic that never came.

The question is, what do you fear more: the swine flu, side effects, or even autism. Many have linked excessive vaccinations in children with autism.
