49ers DB Suffers Third Concussion of Season

Recent studies (see below) point to the dangers of concussions in sports. Today, during what was a lambasting by the Atlanta Flacons, 49ers S Michael Lewis suffered his 3rd concussion of the young season.

To be clear, Lewis suffered two concussions during the preseason during an 11 day period. He could be out for quite some time. The 49ers have a bye next week, but its unclear if he could return after that week or not.

Lewis is 29, in his 8th NFL season and his third as a 49er. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2004 with Philadelphia.

It was an early 3rd-quarter play. Lewis led with his helmet on the hit and lay face down on the field for several minutes while being examined. He was eventually helped off the field, but appeared dazed.

These sorts of injuries are becoming more common in all sports, but particularly in football. Technology in terms of protective gear has not kept up with the increases of speed and strength among players.
