Charlie Davis, 23, U.S. national soccer team forward, is reportedly in serious condition Tuesday evening after a single-vehicle accident in which another person was killed. While serious, his injuries are not life-threatening.

Charlie Davies underwent several hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center Medstar. The accident took place at about 3:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia. The fatality was IDed as Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, MD.

U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said there were three people in the car. Ashley Roberta was not the driver. Charlie Davies and the other occupant of the vehicle were both taken to Washington Hospital Center Medstar, one by land and one by helicopter. Police have not identified the driver. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The U.S. team, including, quite naturally, Charlie Davies, is in the Washington area for Wednesday night's World Cup qualifying game against Costa Rica. Davies has four goals in 17 international appearances.

Last Saturday, Charlie Davies started and played 78 minutes in the Americans' 3-2 victory over Honduras. That victory clinched a sixth straight World Cup berth for the U.S. men.

The U.S. soccer team had a curfew Monday night, with Charlie Davies apparently in violantion. Officials were unaware of the accident until 11 a.m., just as Davies' surgery was about to begin.

U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe initially said that Charlie Davies' injuries were "possibly" career-threatening but later reconsidered the remark, saying, "At this point, we just don't know the extent of the injuries, so we can't comment on how this affects Charlie's future."
