Verizon's Droid Commercial Slams iPhone

Over the past few weeks, Verizon has been slamming the iPhone with ads such as "there's a map for that," which points out the well-publicized issues with the iPhone and AT&T's network. They've also been announcing a series of Google Android phones, and their latest spot (nicknamed iDroid or simply the Droid commercial), about the Verizon Droid device, hits the iPhone right where it iCan.

The Droid commercial, points out what the iPhone can't do, won't do, or doesn't have. For example: "iDon't have a real keyboard," "iDon't allow open development," and "iDon't take 5-megapixel pictures."

The Droid commercial concludes with, "Everything iDon't, the Droid does." The ad states that the Verizon Droid will launch in November, sometime, and as it concludes the iDroid ad directs viewers to droiddoes.com.

At that site, consumers can sign up for a notification when "compromise has been deactivated." In other words, once the Droid releases, you won't be compromising as you have with the iPhone, and, as the Droid commercial wants you to believe, all will be happy in iDroid land.

In reality, Verizon left off some issues that should have been added, as in sometimes "iCan't keep from dropping calls," or "iBoot apps from the App Store for no good reason." Despite that, the Droid commercial was clever, although perhaps with a little too much pop mix to the music.

The Droid is yet another Android device, rumored to have a full QWERTY keyboard (it must, according to the Droid commercial!), 5 megapixel camera, and a processor on par with the iPhone 3GS's. One thing it doesn't have is the iPhone's 85,000 apps. That is a big selling point, and something the iDroid has a long way to go to overcome.

What the Droid also doesn't have is the cult status of Apple and the iPhone. Of course, the Droid commercial does a good job of being snarky, but that doesn't necessarily translate to sales. We'll see what the iDroid can iDo in November.
