Verizon's recent Droid ad slammed the iPhone, but was coy about a Droid release date, saying only November. However, a little decoding seems to indicate that's conservative.
There's a sort of symbolic countdown clock at the bottom of the DroidDoes website (once you either skip or view the aforementioned ad, that is). Reports indicate that once decoded, the countdown timer will elapse on Oct. 30th, which would indicate a Droid release date.
A Droid release date of Oct. 30th had already been theorized, so this isn't a huge surprise. It does go against the grain of the November date mentioned in the ad, but that does not necessarily invalidate it.
While the buzz around the Droid release date is because some posit it could be an iPhone killer, but that's been said before of other devices, and hasn't really happened. The device specifications are very promising; for one the CPU has the horsepower that the CPU of the iPhone 3GS has. Additionally, it has a 5 megapixel camera.
Other information gleaned from its ad is that the device has a QWERTY keyboard, a replaceable battery. What wasn't noted was the iPhone's iCan't make a call functionality, something that many end users have complained about. It has, of course, been unclear that even Verizon's network could handle the iPhone effectly; we'll see what Droid does to its network when the Droid release date rolls around.
Certainly, with its "there's a map for that" ads, as well as the "Droid does" ads, Verizon has excitement around the Droid release date burning up the Internet. Translation to sales is yet another thing, however.
