Andrew Lloyd Webber Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, perhaps best known for his hugely successful "Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats," has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his spokeswoman said Sunday. Webber is 61.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's prostate cancer is in its early stages. His publicists stated that Webber is undergoing treatment and expects to be back at work before the end of 2009.

Andrew Lloyd Webber recently announced plans for the opening of the sequel to his musical "Phantom of the Opera." Called "Love Never Dies," the musical will first open in London at the Adelphi Theatre on March 9, 2010. It will open on Broadway on Nov. 11, 2010 at an as-yet-unnamed theater.

"Love Never Dies" is set in Coney Island in New York, 10 years after the story of "Phantom," as the title character moves from the Paris Opera House to the fairgrounds of Coney island. The London production will star Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom and Sierra Boggess as Christine.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has been married three times. With his first wife, Sarah Hugill, he had two children, Imogen Lloyd Webber (born March 31, 1977) and Nicholas (born July 2, 1979). They divorced in November, 1983.

His second wife was singer/dancer Sarah Brightman. The two had no children, and were divorced in January of 1990.

His current and third wife is Madeleine Gurdon, whom he married on February 9, 1991. They have three children: Alastair Lloyd Webber (born May 3, 1992), William (born August 24, 1993), and Isabella (born April 30, 1996).

Andrew Lloyd Webber has won seven Tony Awards, three Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. In 2006, he was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor. In 1992, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
