Can Little Buddy Child Tracker Succeed in Scaring Your Kids Off?

I can see it now: "Here, honey, let me slip this Little Buddy Child Tracker GPS transmitter into your backpack." Then hours later: hey, why is he still at school hours after the school day is over? Maybe because he took the transmitter out and put it into his locker?

Seriously, however, the Little Buddy Child Tracker is the latest child tracking device to come out, and it's available for pre-order at Best Buy. Currently, the price is $100 and it's backordered for 1-2 weeks, according to their website.

The Little Buddy Child Tracker has some nice features, besides just location of your child. You can create specific times and locations where your child is supposed to be. The device will text message you if he fails to meet those requirements. Grounded? No problem, except if he leaves the darn thing at home.

Insignia's Little Buddy Child Tracker will also let you know when the device's battery is running low. If it sounds Big Brother-ish to you, it does to us as well.

It's also unclear, since the Little Buddy Child Tracker is using both GPS and cellular technology, if you'll have to pay for that cellular connection or not. Amazon's Kindle has a cellular connection, but you don't get stuck with a bill for that, because Amazon.com expects you to buy books, right? Here, there's no such ongoing purchase incentive.

The Little Buddy Child Tracker seems cool, but it still seems too easy to ditch, if a child wants to. Of course, those tracking units that look like wristwatches seem to not work, either, due to generally short-ranges.

If your child already has a cell phone, then probably the best alternative to the Little Buddy Child Tracker would be adding a tracking service like AT&T's FamilyMap service. Your child probably isn't going to ditch his / her cell phone, knowing how techno-centric kids and teens are.
