Both Lou Dobbs' wife and the driver heard the gunshot when it occurred. The home is on a farm about 50 miles northwest of New York City.
While it is possible that, based on the location of Lou Dobbs' house, that the incident was a hunting accident, no hunters were seen in the area. It is small game hunting season in that vicinity, however. The bullet was turned over to the state police ballistics unit.
Monday, on his CNN show, Lou Dobbs told viewers that "a shot was fired at my house." He added that it occurred after a series of threatening phone calls. On his radio show, Dobbs surmised the gunshot was related to his advocacy for a crackdown on illegal immigration.
William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration (ALIPAC), agreed with Lou Dobbs, saying it's very likely Dobbs' outspokenness on illegal immigration led to the shooting.
Lou Dobbs has been the source of considerable angst for CNN of late. Media Matters even tried to get an anti-Dobbs ad aired on CNN, but failed.
