The 49ers' defense tested the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, and while they were able to take a 14 - 6 league into halftime, there is no defense that can stop the Colts forever. Final score: Colts 18, 49ers 14.
Depending on where you looked the 49ers were an 11 or 12 point underdog. If you bet on the 49ers, you won big, as no one gave the 49ers a chance in this game. It was the defense, not the offense, that gave them the chance they had.
Thc Colts shut the 49ers out in the second half. This is the third straight game that the Colts have done that to their opposition. Despite that, the Colts were sweating for much of the game. They went into the fourth quarter still trailing. And you can bet they did not expect to score only one TD (they had 4 FGs and a missed two-point conversion).
The Colts racked up plenty of yardage, however. Their only touchdown: trickery led to that, as an option pass of 22 yards by RB Joseph Addai led to the Colts only TD in the 4th quarter, the first play no less. QB Peyton Manning finished 31 / 48 for 347 yards.
New 49er starting QB Alex Smith was 19 / 32, 198 yards, 1 TD (to TE Vernon Davis) and 1 INT. Frank Gore scored one long TD, but was held in check for most of the game besides that. His 64 yard run in Q1 scored a TD, but he was only 12 rushes for 27 yards besides that.
The 49ers defense, at least, earned the respect of the Colts. Respect doesn't go far in terms of the playoffs, however. With this loss, the 49ers dropped their 3rd straight game and fell to 3-4. The colts are now 7-0.
