New England Beef Recall Expanded

A beef recall of more than a half-million-pounds of ground beef was issued Friday by its producer, Fairbank Farms of Ashville, NY, but on Monday announced it has expanded the range of affected states to include all Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.

Originally, the meat recall was limited to the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Virginia, Massachusetts and North Carolina. However, applying caution because some of the chains may have redistributed their packages, Fairbank Farms expanded the beef recall.

This meat recall is not associated with an earlier recall from last week. In that beef recall, South Shore Meats. It does affect New England, just as that recall did.

The products affected by the beef recall were sold by a number of retailers. They include Trader Joe's, Price Chopper, Lancaster, Wild Harvest, Shaw's, BJ's, Ford Brothers and Giant.

The sell-by dates on the packages affected by the beef recall is in the range Sept. 19 through Sept. 28. The establishment number "EST. 492" would also be inside the USDA inspection mark or on the nutrition label for packages asociated with the meat recall.

The concern is that the meat recalled may have been tainted with e. coli. Any packages included in the beef recall should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. E. coli can cause serious food poisoning in humans, and sometimes death.
