Tragedy at Fort Hood As 11 Dead in Mass Shooting

In addition to Fort Hood, schools in the area are on lockdown. Fort Hood is one of the largest military complexes in the world; it was unknown whether the victims were soldiers, civilians or a mix.

One gunman was reported to be in custody and a search is for at lease one more shooter. However, additional reports indicated that one gunman is reported dead. It is unclear if that is the gunman who was in custody, or another gunman. There are additional reports that there may have been a third gunman.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, (R-TX), told CNN that she was informed by a general on the base that the shooters wore military uniforms. The shooting happened at Fort Hood's Soldier Readiness Center, where troops are readied for deployment. The attack took place just after 1:30 p.m. CST.

At a press conference just broadcast on CNN, it was reported by a military spokesman, Lt. Gen. Bob Cohen, that the gunmen were in fact U.S. soldiers. They were not disguised terrorists. The primary gunman was using two weapons, both handguns.

Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, TX, about 60 miles northeast of Austin. The complex is home to at least 4,929 active-duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. There are also nearly 9,000 civilian employees.
