President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are on their way to Fort Hood, the U.S.'s largest military base, for an afternoon service today. Fort Hood's Soldier Readiness Center was the scene of a massacre last Thursday, as Major Nadil Malik Hasan appeared to stage a one-man war against the military.
The memorial is expected to draw more than 3,000 people, including families of the slain, wounded soldiers and their families, and top brass, as well. President Obama will speak at the event, which will also include the roll call of all 13 killed and as well as the wounded, prayers and a 21-gun salute.
The service is scheduled to begin at 1 PM local time, or CST. That will be 2 PM EST and 11 AM PST. The service comes as new information is revealed about Hasan, including possible ties to a radical imam, emails to Al Qaeda sympathizers, and questions about conscientious objector status for Muslims in the military.
Hasan, mistakenly first thought killed at first, is now awake and talking, reports say. It is still unclear exactly how much confirmation or information authorities have gleaned from him, however.
Hasan is in stable condition at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Officials said he would be tried in military court, rather in civilian court.
