It's here. Netflix on Tuesday announced that streaming for members to their PS3 video game consoles has arrived.
The partnership between Netflix and Sony was announced late in Octorber. The PS3 has picked up momentum of late, due to its recent price cuts. Additionally, the video game console has always been a favorite of those using Blu-ray as it comes with a built-in Blu-ray drive.
The streaming functionality isn't built into the console, so in order to stream Netflix movies, the PS3 requires a "Netflix Streaming Disc for PS3." In order to get that, Netflix users need to request a disc from Netflix; it will be delivered in the mail.
The disc uses Blu-ray's BD-Live functionality to enable streaming. The disc does not need to be returned, nor does it count against your monthly allotment.
While somewhat of a hassle, the disc will eventually disappear. Reports are that the use of a disc is a workaround for Netflix's prior agreement with Microsoft to be the only game console with Netflix streaming integrated.
If you haven't already ordered your Netflix Streaming Disc for PS3, you simply go to www.netflix.com/ps3. Once that red Netflix envelope arrives, you can start streaming.
