It's not something that Lauren has suffered her whole life however. I only began about two weeks ago, when she came down with a head cold.
The condition is known as "machine gun sneezing." It's not even clear that Johnson is sneezing in what people would call a normal sneeze. There's no mucus or discharge, for example.
Lauren has seen six doctors since the syndrome began. However, typical of such events, none has been able to solve the problem. One neurologist went so far as to tell her family that Lauren’s condition could be "irretractable psychogenic disorder," which could be triggered by stress.
On the Today show on Wednesday, NBC's chief medical officer, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, also suggested possible psychological or Tourette’s-related reasons, for Lauren's sneezing.
This is an interesting proposition, and possible. Lauren's sneezing stops when she's in REM sleep. This is, according to Dr. Dominika Osmolska, PsyD, typical of Tourette's.
At any rate, there doesn't seem to be a Guiness Book of World Records category for this, so perhaps Lauren now owns the record as the girl who sneezes 12,000 times a day.
