Yes, that means Michelle Wie, 20, is still 0 for the U.S. on the LPGA tour. It does mean, however, that she finally managed to finish a tournament without collapsing.
Michelle Wie seems to have been around forever, based on when she first appeared on the scene. She first qualified for a USGA event at age 10; she first played in an LPGA event when she was 12. She joined the LPGA this season, but despite arguably being the biggest attraction on the women's tour, she dabbled until this year.
Michelle Wie, in fact, angered some by playing in men's events with exemptions from sponsors, when not only hadn't she won an LPGA event, she hadn't really come that close. And at 16, she was poised to become the first woman to qualify for the men's U.S. Open before her putting issues caused her to fail. Then, she went into a long, drawn out slump that was made worse by a wrist injury in the 2007 season.
This season, she seems to be fulfilling the promise she showed earlier. On Sunday, Michelle Wie shot a 3-under-par 69 Sunday for a two-stroke victory over Paula Creamer.
Morgan Pressel (67), Jiyai Shin (71) and Cristie Kerr (72) were three back. Wie finished at 13-under 275; she started the day tied for the lead with Kerr at 10 under, playing at the Guadalajara Country Club.
It wasn't an easy win for Michelle Wie. Creamer twice tied Wie during the final round. Kerr, who played in the final group with Wie, bogeyed the 15th and 16th to fall out of a tie for the lead.
Wie tweeted the following on her Twitter account: "wowwwww......never thought this would feel THIS great!!!!"
