The body of missing 5-year-old Shaniya Nicole Davis was found Monday afternoon, Fayetteville, NC Police Chief Tom Bergamine said. She was first reported missing last Tuesday.
Worse, if anything can be worse than the news that Shaniya Davis was found dead, her mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis, 25, was arrested late Saturday on allegations that she turned her daughter into a sex slave.
Police have charged Davis with human trafficking, filing a false police report, and felony child abuse, citing the sex slave allegations. Her first court appearance is scheduled later this afternoon; initial reports from the police indicate she did not yet have an attorney.
Earlier, on Friday, Mario Andrette McNeill, 29, was charged with first-degree kidnapping. Police said surveillance footage from a Sanford Comfort Suites hotel showed McNeill carrying Shaniya there. His attorney said he will plead not guilty, although authorities said McNeill admitted taking the girl.
Shaniya Davis was found dead off a heavily wooded road, Walker Road, off N.C. Highway 87, in a rural area. Her body was found about 100 feet off a wooded road southeast of Sanford, in central North Carolina. Police declined to comment on a cause of death or the condition of her body.
Police added that they dropped kidnapping charges against another man, Clarence Coe. He was arrested Thursday in connection with the case, but has since been released.
