After Tom Brady's knee injury last year, the NFL instituted the "Brady Rule" that protects QBs against below-the-knee tackles. Brady Quinn, QB of the Cleveland Browns apparently thought it was named after him, and gave him a free shot against the Baltimore Ravens' DL, Terrell Suggs. At least, that's what many are doing, calling this a Brady Quinn's cheap shot.
Brady Quinn's "cheap shot" took place in the 3rd quarter of Baltimore's 16 - 0 win over the Browns. After throwing his second interception, Quinn dropped and rolled into Terrell Suggs' right knee. He drewa 15-yard penalty and angered the Ravens. You can watch video of the action here, but it's hard to see anything.
Additionally, as some have said, it's not like QBs are used to tackling or defending (although some interception-happy ones ought to be). That said, perhaps it was just a bad decision by Brady Quinn, not a cheap shot. Suggs is likely to be out for a few weeks.
In early Oct. Lewis complained about the Brady rule after a loss to the Patriots. In this case, Ravens LB Ray Lewis made no bones about it. He felt Brady Quinn's hit was a cheap shot.
"When you're running down and you're looking at the quarterback going at somebody's knees who doesn't even have the ball. I want to see if he gets the same fine I got or even higher. Now this man is out four or five weeks because of some baloney like that."
However, there will probably be bad blood the next time the Ravens and Browns meet. While they denied it was retribution for Brady Quinn's "cheap shot," the Ravens laid out a Browns player on the last play of the game.
On the final play, Josh Cribbs, the Browns' top playmaker, was drilled under the chin by Ravens DE Dwan Edwards after receiving a short pass from Quinn, and then lateraling. He lay motionless near midfield for several minutes.
Edwards insisted that he wasn't looking for retribution for Cleveland quarterback Brady Quinn's "cheap shot," and that he wasn't trying to hurt Cribbs. Nevertheless, there will be ill will next game, which will probably be next season, as the Browns and Ravens have played both their games this season already.
