Ford Fusion Becomes Motor Trend 2010 Car of the Year

On Tuesday, Motor Trend magazine named the recipient of its annual Car of the Year award. The Ford Fusion mid-sized sedan, both the gas-only and hybrid versions, was name the magazine's 2010 Car of the Year.

The Car of the Year award doesn't necessarily translate into sales, but it always brings a measure of attention to an automaker. In this case, Ford's Fusion has shown the company is well on the way to recovery.

As always, the 2010 Motor Trend Car of the Year award went to one out of a field of newly introduced or substantially redesigned cars for the 2010 model year. the Fusion was selected from among a field of 22 contenders.

First introduced in 2006, the Fusion was substantially upgraded and redesigned for the 2010 model year. It's hybrid version has won accolades as one of the first true American hybrids that actually performed as it should: saving gas.

The Fusion runs the gamu from hybrid to 4-cylinder to V6. It also spans quite a price range, from $20,000 all the way to the Sport AWD at over $33K.

Motor Trend editor-in-chief Angus McKenzie at the Car of the Year award presentation ceremony, gave credit to the Ford design team. Still, in a recession far worse than anything seen in decades, it's a struggle to sell cars, and the Fusion is in the hottest auto segment in the marketplace. It's a worthy competitor.
