Shaniya Davis, the five-year-old girl who was listed as missing last week and was later found dead off a rural North Carolina road, has been positively identified. Authorities hope a Shaniya Davis autopsy will clear up several outstanding questions.
Shaniya Davis was found dead off a heavily wooded road, Walker Road, off N.C. Highway 87, on Monday. Her body was found about 100 feet off a the road, which is southeast of Sanford, in central North Carolina. A positive ID was not made until yesterday, however.
Police have declined to comment, so far, on the condition of her body and the cause of death. The Shaniya Davis autopsy hasn't been given an official date as yet, but it will be According conducted at Chapel Hill, NC in the office of the Chief Medical Examiner of North Carolina.
Two have already been arrested in the case. Sadly, one of the two is her mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis, 25, who was arrested late Saturday. Davis has been charged with human trafficking, filing a false police report, and felony child abuse.
The other charged is Mario Andrette McNeill, 29, who has been charged with first-degree kidnapping. Surveillance footage from a Sanford Comfort Suites hotel showed McNeill carrying Shaniya there.
200 or so mourners gathered at the Swann Station Baptist Church in Sanford Monday night for a vigil. The mourners included Bradley Lockhart, Shaniya Davis' father, who broke down in tears as he spoke to the crowd.
We will have the results of the Shaniya Davis autopsy once they are released. Stay tuned; this ugly story is not over.
