It began as a special, "Surviving Sextuplets and Twins," which was aired in 2006 and introduced us to the Gosselins and their eight children, a set of twins and a set of sextuplets. The success of the special fueled the series "Jon & Kate Plus Eight," which ends on Monday with a final episode.
The nightmare began when allegations over affairs involving both Jon and Kate emerged. The accustions of Jon's dalliance seemed more solid, but at any rate, the couple made it clear on a "Jon & Kate" episode that aired in June, was seen by 10.6 million viewers, that they were splitting. That's when the nightmare became really frightening.
While initially good for ratings, the split and its contentious fallout became a distraction. While trying to keep the two separate at first, eventually TLC announce they would rebrand the show as "Kate Plus Eight." It was a nice idea.
However, Jon wasn't too happy with that idea. He objected to having the children on TV any longer. TLC spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said Thursday that "'Kate Plus Eight' is not in production. We are focusing on the launch of Kate's new series in early spring."
There were no details forthcoming on what the new series would be. For Monday, the couple will venture on separate outings with the kids. Jon will take them to a fire station near the family home in Wernersville, PA, while Kate will visit a local dairy farm with them. Additionally, Jon and Kate will (separately) reflect on what the past has meant and what the future might hold.
According to TLC, that will be it. The series "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" will die, not with a bang, but with a whimper.
