Stefanie Spielman, Wife of Former NFL LB Dies At 42

Stefanie Spielman, wife of former Ohio State University and NFL linebacker Chris Spielman, has died. She was only 42, and died after a long fight against cancer.

Stefanie Spielman waged a courageous battle against breast cancer. She is survived by her husband and four children, Madison (15), Noah (13), Macy (8) and Audrey (7).

A fund named for her, the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, has raised more than $6.5 million for breast cancer research. This is according to the Spielman Fund Web site. She and her husband also helped form Stefanie's Champions, raising millions of dollars for Ohio State's James Cancer Hospital.

Stefanie Spielman first detected a lump while performing a breast self-exam in early 1998. Consulting her doctor, she was later diagnosed with breast cancer. She went on to undergo a mastectomy and six months of chemotherapy.

At the same time, Chris left his career as a Buffalo Bills LB to be at her side. At the time, he said that leaving Stefanie Spielman in Ohio while he played football would have gone against everything he stood for.

A year later, it seemed that Stefanie Spielman had beaten cancer. Chris made plans to return to the NFL. But But in 2001, a spot was found in Stefanie's lungs. Since then, it's been a long battle.

Public calling hours for Stefani Spielman's body will be on Monday at the Longaberger Alumni House on the campus of The Ohio State University from 1-8 PM. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grandview Heights.
