Drop-Down Side Cribs Eyed For CPSC Ban

A massive new crib recall is expected to be announced today by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This follows a series of prior recalls by the CPSC, but this has a major difference: the CPSC is reportedly considering a ban on all cribs with drop-down sides.

Drop-down sides are a common feature on cribs. There have been several other crib recalls, with many of them related to breaking slats. The CPSC has discussed a ban on drop-down crib sides before.

The way a drop-down crib side works, is that the parent usually lifts up on the side to release a mechanism so the side will drop lower. This provides the parent with easier access to the baby. If installed incorrectly, the side can drop unexpectedly, however.

ABC News reports that sources have told them of the massive crib recall coming. It is unclear which models are being recalled.

However, multiple media sites report that while the CPSC has considered banning drop-down cribs before, the extent of this crib recall is making a complete ban a major push now. More than 4.6 million cribs have been recalled by the CPSC since 2007, for varying reasons.
