Hosting the NCAA Cross Country Championships 2009 was Indiana State University. The men's event, a 10,000 meter cross-country run, was won by Liberty University senior Sam Chelanga.
This was Chelanga's first NCAA Cross Country National Championship. Chelanga placed second in 2008 to Nike runner Galen Rupp, and finished ahead of David McNeill of Northern Arizona University in second and Stanford sophomore Chris Derrick in third. Chelanga was 25 seconds ahead of second place at 28:41.3.
The women's event at the NCAA Cross Country Championships 2009 was a 6,000 meter event. It was taken by Angela Bizarri of Illinois (19:46.8) who broke the tape ahead of University of Washington sophomore Kendra Schaaf for the win. Third was taken by Susan Kuiljken of Florida State. Favorite Jennifer Barringer of Colorado faltered 11 minutes into the race and never regained momentum.
NCAA Cross Country Championships 2009 men's team event was won by Oklahoma State. Oregon was second and Alabama was third.
Meanwhile, in the NCAA Cross Country Championships 2009 women's team event, Villanova ran took the women's team crown. Florida State was second and Washington was third.
