SC Governor Mark Sanford To Face Thirty-Seven Ethics Charges

Mark Sanford

South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, who earlier turned a hiking trip to the Appalachians into a trip to visit his mistress in Argentina, is now officially under ethics investigation. He has been charged with 37 ethics violations, just before tomorrow's hearing to determine if the state legislature wants to pursue impeachment proceedings.

Mark Sanford's charges allege that he broke state laws by violating rules on airplane travel and campaign money, using them as an excuse and as a means to visit his mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, in Argentina. These charges have been expected for some time, as details of Sanford not reporting flights as he should have emerged.

The ethics commission conducted a three-month investigation into the allegations of misconduct on the part of Sanford. The details of the misconduct have been awaited by legislators who are contemplating whether to oust Sanford from office in January, using the impeachment process. This would be a year before Sanford's term expires.

The ethics commission had announced last week that Sanford would face "several" charges but did not reveal the specifics until today. It is now up to the state attorney general to decide whether to file criminal charges.

Mark Sanford has called Chapur his soul mate, but has tried to patch things up with his wife, Jenny Sanford. However, Mrs. Sanford more recently has termed the two as separated. She is writing a book about her experience regarding the affair.
