A Black Friday Survival Guide

Best Buy Black Friday

Black Friday is nearly upon holiday shoppers. As the Friday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year for brick-and-mortar retailers. Many of the Black Friday deals at Sears, Wal-Mart, Target, and others are limited in number, and the crowds are immense. How can you survive?

A Black Friday survival kit, of sorts, can help you with the most efficient trip through your Black Friday deal gauntlet. Many doorbuster deals are extremely limited, and you would't want to brave those mobs for normally priced items, so go prepared.

First, it may be a holiday shopping season, but with all those crowds and jostling, it's ripe for pocket picking as well. To avoid damage, limit the number of credit cards you take with you, and make sure to make photocopies of your cards in case they’re stolen. Also, make sure you have ready access to the emergency numbers on the back of your credit cards in case you need to call if they are lost or stolen.

Second, never keep your wallet in your back pocket. It's the easiest way for a pickpocket to gain access to it.

Third, Watch for distractions. Do not leave your pocketbook or wallet on a counter while paying. All it takes is a minor distraction such as loud noise to distract you and your wallet or pocketbook is gone.

Fourth, in parking lots, take care, particularly in isolated ones. Try to walk with a friend, or ask a security guard to be escorted to your car if you are concerned.

Fifth, since there will be limited quantities of the really discounted Black Friday deals on hand, make sure you have a list of the items you want. Don't get sidetracked by other items (bait-and-switch) that stores may have in place of that item that's already sold out. Anything that's not discounted may be as Christmas approaches.

Sixth, scope out the store beforehand, if possible. While they won't have the deeply discounted stuff out before Black Friday, you migbht be able to figure out where they are going to display it.

Seventh, be smart and bring copies of the ads with you. You may need to show to them to cashiers or clerks.

Finally, use common sense. While these deals are great, they will be gone quickly. Don't expect to be able to go to one store and then head over two hours later to get great Black Friday deals at a second store. Choose your battles wisely, and you just might make it through Black Friday unscathed.
