Three years, and five seasons, plus one special, that started it all, and the series is over. TLC aired the "Jon and Kate Plus 8" series finale, which now means the drama, for what was billed as a family show, is finally over.
The Jon and Kate series finale wasn't about the interaction between the two parents, now split, and their 8 children (sextuplets and twins). There was some activity there, but much of the show was about the couple: discussion of what "went wrong," the future, and their hopes.
The Jon and Kate series finale was inevitable once allegations about Jon's infidelities came to light. In fact, Kate has been accused of an affair as well, with her bodyguard, but she has vehemently denied that accusation. Meanwhile, earlier this year, the two admitted they were splitting. Since then, it has been one drama after another, with Jon withdrawing money from a joint account improperly, divorce papers filed, Jon preventing TLC from starting a "Kate Plus 8" series, and more.
On the Jon and Kate series finale, Kate, 34, was definitely the more moribund of the two. She called the end of the series "bittersweet," but also called it "totally avoidable." Speaking of Jon's affairs, she said:
"(The kids) don't know about the girlfriends at all. That's just too warped for them, too unhealthy for them to know. They're learning at this age by watching us what it's like to be an adult, but that's the last thing I want them to know."
Kate was openly sad and cried as she spoke of her marriage. "I never had a clear picture of how it would end. It's too soon."
Jon, 32, on the other hand, seems to have moved on. He said that they are definitely not going to get together again:
"It's unfortunate that our marriage failed, but our family shouldn't fail. We're gonna have to strive to be the best parents we can whether we're married or not. We're definitely not gonna be married again."
TLC has indicated there is some other show involving Kate in the works, but they did not give specifics. In a pre Jon and Kate series finale special shown on the TVG channel, however, Kate said she was open to not just TV, and perhaps comedy, but even movies.
