Alabama Ekes Out Iron Bowl Win To Stay Undefeated

Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama came into the 2009 Iron Bowl, its annual game against Auburn University undefeated. It excited Iron Bowl 2009 undefeated, but barely, with a closer than it seems 26 - 21 win over Auburn.

Alabama might have been looking ahead to next Saturday. That day, it would have taken on Florida for the SEC championship, and for the #1 ranking in the BCS, if all went as planned. It nearly didn't, as Auburn University had the upper hand for most of Iron Bowl 2009.

Currently, Alabama is #2 in the BCS rankings, trailing Florida. The Crimson Tide didn't play that way in Iron Bowl 2009. In fact, for most of the game the Auburn University defense stymied the Alabama offense.

However, after struggling all game, Alabama's offense drove 79 yards in 15 plays to score with 1:24 left to play. It took a 3-yard TD pass from Greg McElroy to Roy Upchurch with 1:24 to take its first lead of the game. Alabama then tried a 2-pt conversion but it failed.

Auburn University then took the ball, and had it's chances, but it all fell to the final play. Then, a long Hail Mary pass failed, with Alabama's defense knocking the ball aside.

In 2008, Alabama broke a six-game losing streak in the Iron Bowl. This year's win, at Auburn University, gave Alabama, in Iron Bowl 2009, it's first win at Auburn since 2001.

With the win, Alabama (12-0, 8-0 SEC) is now set to meet Florida next Saturday for a chance at the BCS Title game. This, of course, assumes that Florida beats Florida State tomorrow.
