Expensive Perfume As Ebay Slapped With $2.5-million Fine

eBay

eBay was slapped with a 1.8 million euro ($2.5 million) fine by a French court on Monday. The court's verdict stemmed from a charge of of violating an injunction banning sales of LVMH products.

That original case took place in 2008. In that original case, eBay was already hit with a 40 million euro fine, and since then has tried to block French sellers from selling products of these brands on France and U.K. websites.

eBay invested in, the company said, millions of dollars worth of filtering software. That software is used to check millions of daily listings to ensure that the site is in compliance with the injunction.

The original case was brought because of the preponderance of counterfeit LVMH products on the site. However, the injunction itself relates to LVMH’s argument that that online retailers degrade the "image" of their products.

eBay responded with the following statement, from Mary Huser, eBay’s deputy general counsel. She said, "It is extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, for the French consumer to purchase these products because of the money and technology that EBay put into place. We didn’t agree with the decision to implement the injunction. But we did everything to meet the terms.”

eBay has vowed to appeal the decision. The appeal court date has been set for May, 2010.
