In May the wife of then Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Scott Schoeneweis, Gabrielle Schoeneweis, was found dead. On Tuesday the autopsy results were released. She was 39 at the time of her death.
Gabrielle Schoeneweis' body was found by one of the couple's four children, a 14-year-old girl. She told police she found her mother on the floor of the master bedroom. By the time officers arrived on the scene, she was unresponsive and was pronounced dead. At that time, Scott Schoeneweis was in Miami with the Diamondbacks team.
According to the autopsy, former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Scott Schoeneweis’ wife Gabreille Schoeneweis died of an overdose of cocaine and lidocaine (an anesthetic). The court also said that an investigation revealed evidence that her cocaine use “may have caused harm to another person.” That person was not identified.
The court ruling was necessary as Scott Schoeneweis attempted to get his wife's death certificate and autopsy results sealed. A three-judge Court of Appeals panel disclosed the cause of death in a ruling on whether those records on Gabrielle Schoeneweis’ death needed to be disclosed under Arizona’s public records law.
The panel said its ruling disclosed the cause of death to provide guidance “in this and other cases” and because cause of death is a central fact, one which is not subject to considerations of privacy rights vs. public interest. An attorney for Scott Schoeneweis argued that release of the cause of death would cause emotional suffering for the family.
Scott Schoeneweis and his wife Gabrielle Schoeneweis celebrated their 10th anniversary in January of this year. They had three children together; she had a daughter from a prior relationship when the two married. He is now a free agent, having signed only a one-year contract with Arizona for this season.
