A mail-order wreath company, started out of the founder's truck bed, is bucking the trend of joblessness and is hiring more, not less this holiday season. It's a feel-good story for Whitney Wreath, the biggest mail order Christmas wreath company in the country.
Whitney Wreath ships hundreds of thousands of wreaths a year. In 2009, the company signed a new contract with large catalog company L.L. Bean. The contract gave Whitney Wreath a deal to make and mail wreaths sold in this year's catalog, adding a huge influx of additional orders to the already burgeoning wreath business for the Maine company.
Whitney Wreaths, in fact, has hired over 250 more employees for the season stint than last year. The company is based in Machias, Maine. Notably, L.L. Bean is also a Mained company.
These Whitney Wreath jobs are, of course, seasonal. However, in this part of Maine, many residents work at a variety of seasonal jobs year round. They will make Whitney Wreaths in the winter, and harvest blueberries, fish or trap lobster in warmer months.
The founder of Whitney Wreath, David Whitney, noted that his company operates nine facilities in the area, and is building another. "We operate out of 9 different facilities. We're building a new facility which will give us much greater efficiency and capacity to be able to compete, not just on a local level but, throughout the country."
Whitney Wreath, as noted earlier, is the biggest mail-order wreath manufacturer in the U.S. In addition to its L.L. Bean deal, Whitney Wreath also sells products on the "QVC" home shopping channel. You can also buy products via their own site, at WhitneyWreath.com.
