Alexa Ray Joel, 23, Billy Joel's daughter with ex-wife Christie Brinkley, is in stable condition after reportedly overdosing on several pills at her Manhattan apartment. Law enforcement authorities said that they had no information on the type of pills she had taken. She is currently listed in stable condition at a New York hospital.
It is unclear, according to law enforcement officials, exactly what drugs Alexa Ray Joel took, but reportedly she took eight of them. A friend called 911 shortly after 12 PM EST on Saturday from Joel's apartment. It has not been established whether Joel, also a singer like her father, attempted suicide or accidentally overdosed.
Alexa Ray Joel, was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center. Paramedics responded to her friend's 911 call at about 12:30 PM. Joel lives in a West Village apartment. According to the NY Daily News, Joel was conscious and told paramedics she had taken eight pills and was having trouble breathing.
Alexa Ray Joel is the only daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, whose nine-year marriage ended in divorce in 1994. Brinkley, in a blue rain coat, arrived at St. Vincent's at about 4:20 PM. Billy Joel was expected to join her there.
Sources told the News that Alexa Ray Joel had been extremely depressed since breaking up with her boyfriend, ex-bandmate Jimmy Riot. That break-up took place years ago, however. The source added, "She has battled depression. She had a rough breakup with a boyfriend, a musician in her band, several years ago. It was her first love."
An additional on Alexa Ray Joel was the recent and ugly divorce of Christie Brinkley from ex-husband Peter Cook. Reportedly, Billy Joel's marriage to then 23-year-old Katie Lee in 2004 also placed an emotional burden on Alexa Ray Joel.
Alexa Ray Joel began a singing career after dropping out of New York University. She was scheduled to perform twice in Manhattan on this coming Thursday. That would have included appearances at J&R Music World and the New York Stock Exchange tree lighting.
According to Wikipedia, Alexa Ray Joel's middle name is a tribute to Ray Charles. In an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," she stated that the ballad "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)," found on her father's album "River of Dreams," was written for her. The song "The Downeaster Alexa," on Billy Joel's "Storm Front" album, is named for her. Alexa Ray wrote the song “Now It's Gone” about her mom’s break-up with Peter Cook. Her latest single is called "Invisible," which her Web site says "tells the story of disappointment over losing love and self-esteem and finding female empowerment."
