Cincinnati, 12-0, faces a BCS Bowl game against Florida in the Sugar Bowl, but will head coach Brian Kelly's mind truly be on the game? Reports are that Notre Dame plans to interview Kelly for its head-coaching vacancy Tuesday.
Showing the ubiquity of Twitter, Kelly confirmed the interview on his Twitter account. He tweeted: "Just informed our team that Notre Dame has contacted me and I will listen to what they have to say." Kelly met with his team Monday afternoon to inform his players.
At the same time, another highly regarded head coach, Stanford's Jim Harbaugh. denied a report that he is seeking the Notre Dame position. It was reported by The New York Times on Monday. Howver, on Monday Night Football's broadcast, Harbaugh denied the report, indicating he will stay at Stanford. Stanford (No. 19 BCS, No. 21 AP) will be making its first bowl appearance in eight years at the Sun Bowl against Oklahoma.
Notre Dame's Fighting Irish has been on tough times of late, but for any new coach, there is already bad news. QB Jimmy Clausen and receiver Golden Tate said Monday they would bypass their senior seasons to enter the NFL draft.
It is believed that Brian Kelly is the number one candidate on Notre Dame's list. It's also widely believed that the feeling is mutual, and that a decision may be made as early as this week.
As other high-profile candidates have removed themselves from the running, including Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops, Florida’s Urban Meyer, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz and Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald, Kelly has moved to the front of the line. Notre Dame is also not interested in NFL coaches, reportedly leaving out such candidates as Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden.
