Gatorade Discontinues Tiger Drink

It is nearly a soap opera, with everyone wanting to know every single day, what new Tiger Woods news today? Of course, besides his mother-in-law being hospitalized, he's been hit in the wallet. That is the big Tiger Woods news today. The superstar golfer has lost an endorsement, for Gatorade's Tiger Focus Drink.

The parent company of Gatorade is PepsiCo. CNBC reproted on Tuesday that the Gatorade Tiger Focus sport beverage is being discontinued. The company quite naturally, and with a straight face, said the decision had nothing at all to do with the recent and numerous affairs, car accidents, Elin Woods moving out, and other hoopla surrounding Woods. Nope, the decision was made months ago, as part of a streamlining strategy.

To be honest, it will never be known if this is true or not. All the public will ever be able to discern is that the loss of the Gatorade Tiger Focus sports drink endorsement is coincidentally timed. Shares of PepsiCo dropped today 82 cents, or 1.3%, to $63.41, on the news.

Gatorade's Tiger Focus drink was launched across the U.S. in March of 2008. It is the only Gatorade beverage with theanine. Theanine is a chemical found in green tea, used to reduce stress and anxiety. Hence, the name, Tiger Focus. Woods is famous for his aplomb while playing golf, perhaps less so in affairs of the heart, however.

In addition to Theanine, Tiger Focus also contained 25 percent more electrolytes that regular Gatorade, with 7 grams of carbohydrates per 8-ounce serving, 25 calories, 0 grams protein, 135 milligrams of sodium and 40 milligrams of potassium. It was the first Gatorade drink to be named specifically for an athlete.

In terms of his wallet, Tiger Woods will lose royalties. He was not paid a straight-up fee, but instead sales-based royalties for the drink.

Despite the assertions made by PepsiCo to CNBC, one has to ask: is this just the beginning. Until now, all his sponsors have stood by him, but with revelations continuing about further affairs, including at least one with an adult actress, how much longer will that continue?
