Duggar Number 19 Arrives Prematurely Via Emergency C-Section

The Duggar family, which stars in the TLC show "18 Kids and Counting," have just forced the network to rename the show again, albeit prematurely. Michelle Duggar, 42, and Jim Bob, 44, welcomed a 1 pound, 6 ounce daughter, Josie Brooklyn, at 6:27 PM Thursday night, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas.

This follows closely the birth of the first Duggar grandchild. Mackynzie Renee Duggar was born weighing an even 8 pounds to Josh (eldest son) and Anna Duggar in early October. Obviously, Josh and Anna did not continue the trend of the main Duggar family, naming all of the Duggar children with names beginning with "J." It's unclear if Josh and Anna will name all their kids with "M."

Jim Bob and Michelle's baby was not due until March. However, Micehlle Duggar went into the hospital early suffering pain from a gallstone. An emergency C-section was performed, thus bringing Josie Brooklyn Duggar into the world very, very early.

There is considerable concern about Josie Brookly Duggar. While reportedly stable, Josie Brooklyn was born at 25 weeks of age. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in June, babies born at 25 weeks have an 82 percent chance of survival, as long as they receive aggressive treatment through intensive care.

As Michelle Duggar enters, or rather, advances further into her 40s, these types of issues will become more common. While the parents have always said they will continue to conceive as long as possible, one can only hope they will take these issues into consideration.

Only 6 percent of babies are born as early as Jocelyn Brooklyn Duggar. While of those to advance to week 33, most survive, risk for complications obviously increases the earlier a baby is born, according to the March of Dimes.
