Jenny Sanford Files For Divorce From SC Governor

Jenny Sanford, wife of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, has filed for divorce. The couple had been "trying to work it out" after revelations of the governor's affair with an Argentinian woman, Maria Belen Chapur, which he announced publicly in June.

Jenny Sanford had known of the affairs for months, according to reports. In fact, she had discovered evidence of his affair with Maria Belen Chapur for five months, prior to the June announcement made by Mark Sanford.

Originally, before his June press conference, Mark Sanford was out of touch, saying he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. In fact, he had flown to visit Maria Belen Chapur in Argentina. This, and other issues discovered later, led to a series of ethics charges against the governor.

Since the revelations, Mark and Jenny Sanford have been separated. Jenny Sanford has been living at the family’s beach house on Sullivan's Island, SC, with the couple's four sons. As late as Thursday, Mark Sanford told news media that he wanted to remain married.

In a statement issue Friday, however, Jenny Sanford indicated she has filed for divorce, citing adultery as the cause. Her statement said:

“As so many of us know, the dissolution of any marriage is a sad and painful process. Because Mark and I are public figures, we have naturally had less privacy with which to deal with our difficulties than do other couples. Indeed, I know it will soon become known, so I choose to release this brief notice that I am now filing for divorce.

“This came after many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation, yet I am still dedicated to keeping the process that lies ahead peaceful for our family.”

Responding to Jenny Sanford's statement, Mark Sanford said that while divorce was not the path he wanted, he would accept her decision. Not only that, he added that he would take full responsibility for the marriage's failure.

As noted, there were ethics violation charges against Mark Sanford. There were also calls for impeachment and resignation. On Wednesday, a subcommittee of the S.C. State Legislature voted not to recommend impeachment. However. it did recommend censuring Sanford for bringing “ridicule, dishonor, disgrace and shame” on South Carolina.
