Sprint Android Phones to Get 2010 Android 2.0 Updates

Although much interest right now is focused on the Google phone, which if all pans out might see the light of day in January, there's also a lot of interest in Andoid phones getting an Android 2.0 update. That's because there's only one phone with Android 2.0 currently on it, and that's the Motorola Droid on Verizon. It looks like Sprint phones will join the 2.0 bandwagon, in 2010.

Verizon has already announced the Droid Eris will get the 2.0, or maybe even 2.1 update in 2010. This is the first time that Sprint Android phones have been confirmed to get the same update.

Sprint announced via Twitter on Friday that it will offer an Android 2.0 update for both the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment. Both phones were recently introduced, and news of these updates will possibly spur adoption of the phones.

Android 2.0 has significant improvements over prior releases, and the Droid's "exclusivity" gives it a real edge. Unfortunately, the update won't come until the first half of 2010. Naturally, no specific date was given.

Meanwhile, there's still further distraction, and something that may make Motorola Droid buyers and others interested in Android hold off for a while. There are leaks all over about a Google phone. This wouldn't be Google hardware, but rather a phone with only Google branding, manufactured by HTC. It would also run Android 2.1.

Considering the number of Google employees tweeting about the new phone, which was apparently given out in numbers to employees on Friday, an official statement on the Google phone is expected in the coming days.
