Former Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Brian Bonsall, 28, could face 2 to 6 years in prison if convicted of a second-degree assault charge prosecutors filed on Friday. He has been charged in Colorado with repeatedly hitting a friend in the head with a broken wooden stool.
Brian Bonsall was arrested Saturday, Dec. 5th. He appeared briefly in a Boulder, CO courtroom on Wednesday morning. Authorities said that Bonsall was involved in a fight at an apartment in the 1100 block of 11th Street in Boulder on Dec. 5th. The unidentified victim told police that Bonsall hit him with a part of a broken wooden stool.
Brian Bonsall has only told officers that he was drinking heavily that night. He doesn't remember what happened, yet terms the man who called police that night his "best friend."
Brian Bonsall was already wanted on an arrest warrant for missing a court hearing in 2007 on suspicion of violating bond conditions on a 2007 case. He had been sentenced to two years of probation in that case, for assault on his then girlfriend.
After his childhood acting career, Bonsall lived in Boulder for several years. He graduated from Boulder High School in 2000, but has had several run-ins with the law since then, including a 2004 arrest for drunk driving and the aforementioned 2007 arrest. Bonsall is perhaps just the latest example of childhood actors who fail to adjust to adult life and end up in legal trouble.
Brian Bonsall played Alexander Rozhenko, son of the Star Fleet Klingon Worf, on the Star Trek: TNG series. That role was first played by Jon Steuer as a toddler Alexander in the character's first appearance, in the ST:TNG episode "Reunion." Later producers decided to make Alexander's rold recurring, and wanted an older child actor to portray the character because of the demands of recurring filming.
In addition to his recurring role on Star Trek: TNG, Bonsall played the role of the youngest Keaton sibling, Andy, on the NBC sitcom "Family Ties." That show starring Michael Keaton, Meredith Baxter, and Michael J. Fox.
