Pre-eclampsia Cause of Premature Duggar Birth

The latest Duggar baby, number 19, named Josie Brooklyn was born prematurely due to a condition known as pre-eclampsia. She weight only 1 pound, 6 ounces and was born at only 25 weeks.

Jim Bob, 44, and Michelle, 42, did not expect their 19th baby until March. However, Michelle Duggar went into the hospital early suffering pain from a gallstone. Apparently, at this time, pre-eclampsia was diagnosed. An emergency C-section was performed, thus bringing Josie Brooklyn Duggar into the world very, very early.

Pre-eclampsia is a condition of pregnancy that affects 5 to 8 percent of expectant mothers. It is marked by high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine. Pre-eclampsia often causes only modest increases in blood pressure. However, if left untreated, however, preeclampsia can sometimes progress to eclampsia, and fatal results for mother and baby.

Pre-eclampsia diagnosis is confirmed when a pregnant woman develops high blood pressure (two separate readings taken at least 4 hours apart of 140/90 or more) and 300 mg of protein in a 24-hour urine sample. It can develop anywhere from 20 weeks of gestation. Apart from C-section or labor induction, there is no known cure.

Pre-eclampsia is much more common in a first pregnancy than in later ones. However, Josie Brooklyn is the 19th baby for Michelle Duggar and her husband, Jim Bob. It is not unheard of, though unusual, for pre-eclampsia to occur in such a pregnancy.

Although there is no 100 percent sure way to prevent pre-eclampsia, some evidence shows that very low doses of aspirin may reduce the risk of occurrence. Additionally, age plays into the risk factors for the condition. It is seen most often in women younger than 20 or older than 35.
