A USA Today / Gallup poll shows that superstar (and oversexed) golfer Tiger Woods' popularity has plummeted since revelations of his numerous affairs have arisen. It had been four years since the last such poll, and the results should shock no one who knows of the recent Tiger Woods events.
The USA Today / Gallup poll showed that Tiger Woods' "favorable" rating has dropped to 33 percent. This compares with 85 percent in June 2005. Meanwhile, his "unfavorable" rating spiked to 57 percent from only 8 percent in the same June 2005 poll.
While most of his sponsors continue to stand behind Tiger Woods, although Accenture has dropped him completely, the poll showed that 19 percent said they would have a "less favorable" opinion of companies that use him as a spokesperson.
This all began with a seemingly innocuous car accident on Black Friday, Nov. 27, 2009. It then spiraled into a PR nightmare as it became apparent the accident was likely the result of an argument between Woods and wife Elin Nordegren Woods.
It became still more of an issue as women began relating their sordid tales of affairs with Tiger Woods to various media sites. Rumors of payoffs, prostitution, and more arose. Stories of revised prenuptial agreements and Elin Woods moving out did not help.
Things became so bad that Tiger Woods said he was leaving pro golf for an indefinite period. The objective was to be a better husband and family man, but since then rumors have arisen that Elin Woods has already decided on a legal separation after the holidays.
Jeffrey Jones, managing editor of the Gallup Poll said that "For many years, Woods was the most positively rated person we rated. Now he ranks worse than a lot of the politicians we measure. The drop is definitely unprecedented." The national poll was conducted among 1,025 adults and done Friday Dec. 11, 2009 - Sunday Dec. 13, 2009.
