The struggling Washington Redskins have seen the first axe blow fall. Vinny Cerrato has "resigned" vice president of football operations of the NFL team.
At the same time the Washington Redskins have made a quick move to replace him. Just hours after Vinny Cerrato's resignation, the team announced that Bruce Allen will be hired as executive VP and general manager.
Bruce Allen is the son of former Redskins coach George Allen. He is also is the former GM of the Raiders and Bucs, from whom he was fired in January. It seems the NFL's revolving door continues to spin, as Allen is in and Vinny Cerrato is out. Allen becomes the first person hired by owner Dan Snyder to hold the title of general manager.
Dan Snyder was close friends with Vinny Cerrato, but apparently that couldn't stop fallout from a 4-9 season. It's widely rumored that head coach Jim Zorn might be out as well, with the Redskins reportedly having feelers out to former Bronco head coach Mike Shanahan. That will likely be one of the first items on Bruce Allen's agenda. Jim Zorn has gone 12-17 through two seasons in Washington.
Vinny Cerrato's resignation comes with 3 games left in the regular season. It reflects the criticism he faced in 2009 over various personnel moves.
In a statement released by the Redskins, Vinny Cerrato said: "We agreed that the franchise needs someone different in this position. I'm thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I've been given over the years. Of course, I am disappointed with this year's results, but I strongly believe that with outstanding draft picks and encouraging performance by our younger players, we have laid a strong foundation for the franchise."
Meanwhile, owner Dan Snyder said the following in his own statement: "Bruce Allen is the personification of an NFL winner. Our fans know his heritage; we know his abilities. He is the right person to lead our club."
