Anthony Marshall Sentenced To Prison In Brooke Astor Case

Anthony Marshall, 85 and the son of philanthropist Brooke Astor (pictured) was sentenced Monday to one to three years in prison. He had been convicted earlier of exploiting his mother, stealing millions.

The conviction followed a five-month trial. Prosecutors painted Anthony Marshall as being impatient to get his hands on Brooke Astor's money. She lived 105 years, and did not pass away until 2007.

Defense attorneys had argued that at his age, sentencing Anthony Marshall to any jail time at all was tantamount to a death sentence. However, the judge refused to consider that, and gave Marshall 30 day to get his affairs in order.

However, he is expected to appeal and may be able to be remain out on bail. Additionally, with good behavior, Anthony Marshall could be out of prison in as little as 8 months.

Anthony Marshall's lawyer friend Francis Morrissey, 66, is expected to be sentenced later today for forging Brooke Astor's signature on a will. Marshall was convicted of 14 counts, including first-degree grand larceny and scheming to defraud, for looting his mother’s $185 million fortune.

His defense team brought a number of Anthony Marshall's friends in to plead for mercy after the Brooke Astor verdict was read. No less than 75 rallied around him, attempting to get the first-degree larceny conviction, which carried mandatory prison time, thrown out.

Those friends included both Whoopi Goldberg and Al Roker. However, Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann made light of those recommendations. He said, "When you're stealing millions from mother, it's not enough to say you're nice to Whoopi Goldberg."
