We already knew the name of the attempted Northwest Airlines Flight 253 bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, a Nigerian national. The citizen hero, however, we only now know to be Jasper Schuringa.
Jasper Schuringa is a video director and producer from Amsterdam (flight 253 was traveling from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan). He told CNN how helped the cabin crew subdue Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who reportedly ignited a small explosive device on board the plane Friday as it prepared to land in Detroit.
Jasper Schuringa said he heard a big bang that sounded like a firecracker going off. Syed Jafry, who was sitting in seat 16G, echoed the statement, stating it happened as the plane began to descend.
Jasper Schuringa said someone started yelling "Fire! Fire!" However, he then noticed that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was sitting still. Lunging toward Abdulmutallab's seat, he saw that Abdulmutallab was holding a burning object between his legs.
Jasper Schuringa pulled the object from him, tried to extinguish the fire with his hands and threw it aside. He called for water, and instead heard fire extinguishers behind him, as he then helped crew finish subduing Abdulmutallab.
This is the "new" reality of being a passenger. Since 9/11, many people have said they would no longer stand by shocked if a hijack or any other attempt of this sort is made. Instead, they will act, even if weapons are drawn against him. As he returned to his seat, Jasper Schuringa was applauded by other passengers.
He said, "My hands are pretty burned. I am fine. I am shaken up. I am happy to be here."
