Alamo Bowl Score Overshadowed By Absence Of Leach

The final Alamo Bowl score was 41-31, Texas Tech defeating Michigan State. Despite that, however, there was a pall over the Texas Tech sideline, given the missing Mike Leach.

Last week, the Red Raiders fired head coach Mike Leach after allegations that he mistreated WR Adam James following a concussion, locking him in a dark equipment shed. Fans seemed to blame James more than Leach, booing him so badly, despite the Alamo Bowl score of 20-14 Texas Tech over Michigan State at halftime, that the marching band was drowned out.

In truth, the Alamo bowl score of 41-31 didn't show the true drama of the game. Leading at the half, Texas Tech had to come back to win. Michigan State led 28-27 going into the final quarter, and led 31-27 in the fourth.

The Spartans appeared to get a break when Tech quarterback Taylor Potts left the game after injuring his non-throwing hand, leaving with an Alamo Bowl-record 372 yards and two touchdowns. Instead, that was a key decision by Red Raider offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

Lincoln Riley brought Steven Sheffield off the bench with only 8 minutes left, and the sub directed two consecutive scoring drives. Sheffield came onfield to complete 9 of 11 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown to rally Texas Tech.

While the Alamo bowl score of 41-31 capped the season, giving Texas Tech (9-4) its ninth win for the third straight season, ending the season with a three-game win streak for the first time since 1995.

Meanwhile, the 41-31 Alamo Bowl score rained on Michigan State's parade. The team finished with a losing 6-7 record. They were, however, somewhat relieved to see the Mike Leach incident. It drew attention from Michigan State's own SNAFU: 14 players who didn't make the trip in the wake of a Nov. 22 dormitory brawl.
